Chris Mattingly:

poet Chris Mattingly lives in Louisville, Kentucky, and often writes about The
the land and culture of his home, whether in the form of a celebration or fierce
complaint. Chris Mattingly is the author of the chapbook Ad Hoc from Q Avenue
Press. His poems have most recently appeared in Louisville Review, Margie,
Trajectory, Southern Indiana Review, and Public Republic. He also reviews books for
the Louisville Courier-Journal and plays banjo in the Fatted Calf Stringband.

Chris Mattingly was inspired by the working-class lives of his grandparents, great
uncles, father and mother and grew up listening to the stories indigenous to the
Pennyrile region of Kentucky. Inventive yet rooted in place, his work reflects a
heritage that is sometimes beautiful and often bewildering. Poet Maurice Manning
wrote of Ad Hoc: “Chris Mattingly’s poems come from the other side of the tracks,
from a country world known less for its tranquil beauty than its despair, its
inevitable violence. Never, however, does Mattingly impose a wish that the world
he knows so well were otherwise: he prefers the honest grit, a pursuit which
charges his poems with sincerity and forgiveness.”

Mattingly holds a degree in English from Indiana University and an M.F.A in Poetry
from Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky.
