Monterey County Fair

Lots of updates on www.montereycountyfair.com but here's a start about the upcoming Monterey County Fair! An adorable colorful illustration from the charming children’s book, Chippie de Munk: The Great Inventor, written by internationally respected and beloved Pebble Beach artist, Jo Mora, has been selected to compliment "The Fair is in the Air!” theme of the 2010 Monterey County Fair (www.montereycountyfair.com) . The image depicts a crowd of animals cheering Chippie de Munk’s ingenious way of conquering flight. The Monterey County Fair will celebrate the American spirit of creativity and innovation, as well as the importance of reading and literacy, during its 6-day run from September 1-6, 2010.

In addition to visually relating to Jo Mora’s artwork from his book, Chippie de Munk, the theme, “Fair is in the Air!” refers to all of the wonderful sights, sounds, smells, and tastes that all Fairgoers enjoy during the Monterey County Fair. The community’s anticipation and excitement always builds until “The Fair is in the Air” during Fair week.

Thomas Friedman, the Pulitzer prize-winning journalist, wrote last year regarding America’s future, “We might be able to stimulate our way back to stability, but we can only invent our way back to prosperity.” And, throughout 2010, the Monterey County Fair will encourage the spirit of invention among us all. In addition to other activities, the Fair will sponsor a special inventor’s contest for both youth, and will feature a special Hall of Innovation during Fair week.

Joseph Jacinto (“Jo”) Mora (1876-1947) was a versatile man who also enjoyed an adventurous life. He was a sculptor, painter, author, illustrator, cartoonist, muralist and diorama-maker, as well as an artillery major and Indian language interpreter for the U.S. Army, honorary member of the Hopi and Navajo tribes, cowhand, and photographer. He began his professional career as an illustrator for The Boston Traveler and The Boston Herald. He also drew and wrote a feature Sunday cartoon page called Animaldom. He moved to Carmel in 1920, and established a studio at the Carmel Mission. There, he began one of his most handsome pieces, the monumental cenotaph of bronze and travertine representing Father Junipero Serra and his assistants. After completing this work, the Mora’s acquired a new home in Pebble Beach through his close relationship with Samuel F. B. Morse. Jo Mora also carved the wooden oak Serra Shrine located at Camino Del Monte and Alta in Carmel, as a commission for Morse. Jo Mora well-known for the series of detailed and humorous maps (cartes) that he created. In addition, Jo created beautiful decorative elements for many buildings, including the Monterey County Courthouse.

Outside of the Monterey Peninsula, Jo Mora created San Francisco’s Cervantes Sculpture in Golden Gate Park and the Bret Hart Memorial on the wall of the Bohemian Club, as well as dioramas for the Will Rogers Memorial in Oklahoma. He designed fountains, such as the one at Villa Montalvo in Saratoga, and did wall murals for Julia Morgan’s Los Angeles Examiner building. U. C. Berkeley has a marble bench made by Jo Mora and Mora also designed the commemorative half dollar for the 75th anniversary of California statehood. Towards the end of his career, he wrote and illustrated two books, Trail Dust & Saddle Leather and Californios, and two of his children’s books include “Chippie de Munk: The Great Inventor” and “Budgee Budgee Cottontail.” The image that will be used for the 2010 Fair is made available through Peter Hiller of the Jo Mora Trust (jomoratrust.com).

The Monterey County Fairgrounds is a premiere event center set on 22 oak-studded acres with ample parking. It is home of the annual award-winning Monterey County Fair, host to many major and private events on the Central Coast, and the site of the Monterey Bay Race Place, a Satellite Wagering Facility. It also was the site of the legendary Monterey Pop Festival, and is the location for the internationally known Monterey Jazz Festival and Monterey Blues Festivals, among other events. The Monterey County Fair is the 7th District Agricultural Association of the State of California.
