Singer-Songwriter Griffin House wows the Golden Bough after an intimate performance during the Carmel Art & Film Festival.

The thirty year old Ohio based singer-songwriter put on an intimate and entertaining show last night for a small, engaged audience at the Golden Bough Theatre in downtown Carmel, California during this years Carmel Art & Film Festival.

Dressed like a good ol’ country boy, geared with a baseball cap, shaggy curls, bright blue eyes, jeans and a plaid shirt, House sang of personal experiences ranging from grass-root tall-tail stories his grandfather had shared with him, to rivers, love loss and lady stealers. House also set his songs up for his audience, explaining intimate and personal details of a particular song he was about to sing, what it meant to him and what inspired the writing of that song.

The young artist was fresh, charming and quite comical as well. The audience at The Golden Bough Theatre was fully engaged and were left wanting more, giving the Americana-folk singer-songwriter a standing ovation.  The show felt more like an intimate evening with great friends, hanging around a camp-fire, listening to great stories by an amazing singer buddy.  It was one of those moments you just did not want to end.

Heading down to the green room after the show, I was eager to get to know the young star.  In an exclusive interview with Griffin House I couldn’t help but feel as if I had known him for years.  A down-home fellow who looks you straight in the eye and spoke with a casual sort of confidence.  Upon introducing myself to Griffin, he said “I’m Griffin, you live here?”  I replied a quick “Yep!”  He followed with “I’m going to live here one day too, I love it!”  I asked him “Where are you from?”  He excitingly answered “Springfield, Ohio.”  And followed with “But I live in Nashville some of the time; well on and off for the past six or seven years anyhow.”  I asked, “Is that where you were noticed as a singer-songwriter?”  “Yeah, I had a few record labels who were looking at me and knew I needed to go, so I did and moved in with one of my buddy’s,” he replied.

A few fans began strolling in wanting autographs from this young, talented musician.  House graciously answered questions for people, signed a few autographs and quickly showed his polite side, coming back to me apologizing for being interrupted.  I told him no apology needed and we continued with the interview.

TM:  What did you do for work in Nashville to feed your music career, prior to getting noticed?

Griffin:  I worked in a gift shop in downtown making only six dollars and fifty cents per hour.  I was only making five hundred a month, but managed to make some demos and eventually began doing some shows.

TM:  There is an intense depth with you Griffin!  Where do these songs come from and do you have any writing experience?

Griffin:  I studied in college, graduated with a degree in English Literature, did a lot of  creative writing, got my bachelors and was done.  I’ve always loved writing about my personal experiences; things that move me, things that brought feeling and emotion out of me.  I've always figured, if I feel moved when I write and I get to sing about it, than my fans will feel what I feel too, you know what I mean?”

TM:  I sure do Griffin! I responded.  I get it, and felt the passion of your lyrics as you sung, so keep doing what you‘re doing, it’s definitely

coming through to your audience.

TM:  Did you sing when you were younger, or was that something that you developed later on?We continued: So you play the guitar and the harmonica; did you have any formal training?

Griffin [nodding his head]:  Nope, actually I heard a guy playing the harmonica and knew I wanted to learn it, so I taught myself.  The guitar too!  I've had no formal training what-so-ever, just a lot of practice.

Griffin:  Well, I tried out for a play at school, the play was Oklahoma.  I was the bad guy. They asked me to sing and so I did.  I enjoyed being on stage. He joked, “Playing a mean guy, must have brought out those mean thoughts in me.  The part of my songwriting that wants to drown a guy that took the girl I loved with the beautiful hair,” he said with a playful giggle.  He quickly added, “To be honest, I was mostly a sports guy in high school, playing mostly golf, and baseball too.  But, mostly golf.  I even got a golf scholarship, but turned it down to play music.”

TM:  You have Jeff Irwin on the bass, Evan Hutchings on the drums, Clint Wells on the guitar and you singing.  How long have the four of you been together for?

Griffin:  Only about two and a half years.  We did our first United States tour together just this last year in 2009.  We’ve been going strong ever since.

TM:  So my last question for you Griffin is, where do you see yourself five years from now?

Griffin [a matter of fact]:  I’m going to be living in Bing Crosby’s old house, playing golf every day in Pebble Beach and hopefully playing better than Ben Hogan.  Adding, “And of course, playing music just for the straight fun of it!"

The last answer from Griffin House’s wrapped up his character in a nut-shell.  This blue-eyed, brown haired singer-songwriter from Springfield Ohio is a talented, easy going guy, who wants to enjoy the simple things in life; the two things he is most passionate for, music and golf.

We ended our interview and I shared with Griffin how he had a new fan in me thanks to the 2010 Carmel Art & Film Festival.  It ended in a sincere hug.  This guy is the real deal and has a voice to not be overlooked.

Griffin House has been compared to musicians such as Ray LaMontagne and Joseph Arthur.  If you haven’t heard House’s music, below are a few links to check out.  Some personal favorites are:  1) When the time is right 2) The guy that says goodbye 3) Better than love.
