Lovers of the Freestyle Bullfights at the Rodeo will Love the 2012 Poster California Rodeo Salinas Commissions Ash Cooper to bring Signature Event to Life
SALINAS, CA December 9, 2011 – The California Rodeo’s new President, Benny Jefferson, has been involved with the Freestyle Bullfights that are the finale to the Rodeo’s daily shows for over 20 years. It is the privilege of the President to choose a theme for each year’s commemorative poster and long before his first year of service started, Benny knew the event he wanted to feature. The poster features legendary bullfighter Rob Smets in one image and a snapshot of the arena with bullfighter Andy Burelle in another image. The poster has vivid colors and captures the action of the exciting event that fans love. In the Freestyle Bullfight event, bullfighters risk their body to make moves on the keen bulls, displaying their speed and agility as they dodge the feisty animal and keep the crowd on the edge of their seats. The poster was painted by artist and rodeo clown, Ash, aka CrAsh, Cooper of Canada. CrAsh performed at the 2009 California Rodeo Salinas and when he isn’t working rodeos, or in between doing so, he is an artist known best for his work with Leanin’ Tree greeting cards. An award-winning western artist, rodeo clown and television host, Ash Cooper’s art includes limited edition graphite drawings and watercolor paints with an emphasis on western cartoons. One of Leanin’ Tree’s top artists, Ash’s life as a rancher and rodeo entertainer provides constant inspiration for his art. Ash took interest in the bullfight poster concept and viewed some Spanish bullfighting posters to apply some of those elements to this poster. Learn more about Ash and his artwork or rodeo entertainment at www.crashcooper.com.
Posters are available in the Rodeo Office for $15 each, or $30 for posters signed by Ash Cooper, and online at www.carodeo.com in the store portion of our website. The website store page link is http://www.carodeo.com/store/. Please note we will not be able to ship these to you until after December 20th. The Rodeo Office is open Monday-Friday from 9am to 5pm and closed for lunch on Fridays from 11:45amto 1:15pm.

California Rodeo Salinas Announces New President, Officers & Directors
California Rodeo Salinas Announces New President, Officers & Directors
SALINAS, CA -The California Rodeo Salinas is proud to have over 1,200 volunteers that help to run the four day rodeo and other annual events each year. The Rodeo Board consists of 52 Directors, 6 of whom are Officers, 45 Advisory Directors and 14 Past President Directors. The Directors are in charge of various aspects of the Rodeo or other events and work year round to insure success for the association. Each year at our Stockholders Meeting in October, we announce the newest Officers and Directors and every two years, we usher in a new President. This year Benny Jefferson will take over as President of the California Rodeo for 2012 and 2013. The Officers of the Rodeo Association consist of the President, three Vice Presidents, a Secretary and a Treasurer. This year the new Officers are 3rd Vice President Brent Eastman and Secretary Fred Hooker. New Directors are Dave McDougal, Patty Standridge and Tony Rossi.
Benny Jefferson has lived in the Salinas Valley his entire life and credits his love of the Rodeo to his parents raising him in the western way of life and his dad being an avid team roper who competed at the Rodeo many times. A farmer, Benny is involved in not only the Rodeo, but also the California Farm Bureau and is the chairman of the Salinas River Coalition which represents property owners from the mouth of the Salinas River to South of San Ardo. He started out on the Ground Preparation Committee at the Rodeo in the early 80s. He has two sons, Kenneth and Martin (Jamie) and a granddaughter, Addy, a daughter, Mellisa (Rick) and two grandchildren, Jordan and William, and two step sons Ryan (Natalie) Lisk and John Lisk. Benny and his wife, Donna, live in King City.
Brent Eastman grew up in Salinas and started volunteering with the Rodeo in 1986 on the Director’s Patio Committee and he now chairs the Announcing Committee and has since 1995. Brent is the owner of Brent Eastman Insurance Services, established in 1995, and lives in Salinas with his wife Maureen; they have five children-Amanda (21), Sam (18), Cammeron (14), Ben (9) and Brent Jr (9). Beyond the Rodeo, Brent is the Board President for Partners for Peace, he sits on the Board of Public Recreation Unlimited and is a co-announcer for the Palma-Notre Dame Track Team.
Fred Hooker first became involved with the California Rodeo in 1978 on the Blue Grass/Salt Flats Hoe Down Committee; he then served on the Round Up Day Barbecue Committee for 17 years before moving to the Concessions Committee and becoming chairman in 2005 and then Director of Concessions in 2007. Fred now manages all the non-profit and specialty food vendors, beer concessions, inventory purchasing and the midway and other merchants. Fred’s sons and daughters have served on committees and he loves the fact that the Rodeo is a family affair. Fred lives in Salinas with his wife Mary.
Dave McDougal started volunteering at the Rodeo in 1994 in the Indian Village. He has been chairman of the Kids Corral Committee since 1999. His wife of 24 years, Nancy, is by his side helping to run the Kids Corral, build floats for parades and support the Rodeo in any way they can. Dave is self-employed with OnSite Equipment Repair which provides heavy equipment service for Ag and Construction companies. He has two grown children, Stephanie and Chris, and a five month old grandson, Colby James. When he isn’t working long hours, he enjoys spending time with the family, camping in the RV, Autocross Racing, and he supports his son Chris’ sport of motorcycle racing as “Pit Crew Chief.”
Patty Standridge is a lifelong resident of Salinas and the Chairman of our Banking Committee and has been since 2005. She started volunteering on the committee in 1998. Patty has also worked for Nunes Company since 1998. The banking committee doesn't get any limelight but is one of the most vital functions to our association and Patty handles this huge job gracefully. She has three kids-Jennifer, Jocelyne and Peter and 4 beautiful granddaughters. When she isn’t working, she enjoys yoga, walking and spending time with her family.
Tony Rossi has volunteered on the Arena Committee since 1978; he helps out every year with the Special Buckaroos Rodeo, a special rodeo that is put on for handicapped children on the track on Saturday before the Rodeo starts, and Tony is also on the Construction Committee for ‘The Stadium’ project that Public Recreation Unlimited is leading. Tony and his wife Susie live in Salinas and own and operate Rossi Masonry. They have a son, Timmy, and daughter, Gina. When Tony isn’t working, he enjoys hunting, fishing and golfing.

2011 California Rodeo Salinas does not Disappoint Big Week full of Talented Cowboys, Funny Clowns and Much More
2011 California Rodeo Salinas does not Disappoint Big Week full of Talented Cowboys, Funny Clowns and Much More SALINAS, CA July 25, 2011 – The 2011 California Rodeo Salinas is in the record books and the committee is happy with the outcome. Though attendance dipped 4% from the centennial anniversary numbers for the four days of Rodeo this year with a final number of 47,600, the committee is pleased with the fact that attendance was up 4.5% from 2009. Taking into account the fact that hotel rooms were expensive and hard to come by and the weather wasn’t all that great, the numbers were still strong and represent growth from a non-anniversary year. And with all the entertainment the Rodeo offers at such an affordable price, it’s no surprise that fans turned out to watch the top cowboys and cowgirls compete in the rodeo, socialize in the Bull Xing Cantina and Crown Royal Saloon, shop in the mall area or on the midway or to take their kids to the Kids Corral. Each night or day of the Rodeo featured a theme of some sort, starting with Tough Enough to Wear Pink night on Thursday. Cancer Survivors carried a giant American flag in the arena during opening ceremonies, the Miss California Rodeo Salinas 2011 title was presented to Kendra Brennan while she was wearing pink, $1 from each ticket sold on Thursday night was donated to the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System and cowboys sported pink shirts. The crowd of 9,038 people enjoyed the antics of Rodeo Clown Gizmo McCracken, chuck wagon races, bull riding and freestyle bull fights. Friday July 22nd was the first ever Fight Hunger Night at the California Rodeo and featured a mascot race on the track consisting of mascots from local produce companies who sponsored the rodeo and added money to be donated to Ag Against Hunger. The race was a fan pleaser and the program raised $11,450 for the local non-profit group that gleans from fields after they are harvested to provide fresh produce to local food banks. Friday also featured FFA kids carrying the giant American Flag in the opening ceremony, a stick horse race before the show, fireworks and more. Attendance for the night was 12, 314. Saturday morning was a bit chilly for the first day performance of the Rodeo, but the sun did finally come out and fans were treated to a tribute to our military as active military with ids were granted complementary entry to the event, a Navy Choir sang the National Anthem and 32 of our servicemen and women in uniform carried the forty by twenty foot American Flag in the arena. The Special Buckaroos Rodeo on the track was held at noon for 24 special needs children in Monterey County and hosted by professional cowboys and cowgirls who treated the kids to a once in a lifetime experience. The daily horse parade made its way from Old Town Salinas to the Salinas Sports Complex. Several members of the 11,207 person crowd stayed to listen to live music in the Bull Crossing Cantina and Crown Royal Saloon after the show finished with freestyle bullfights. The sun was shining down on the final day of the 2011 California Rodeo on Sunday July 24thfor the Day of Champions. Cowboy Church was held that morning and the crowds formed in the midway early in the day. Winners in each event went home with the much desired Salinasbelt buckle for topping the other contestants in their field. Over 15,000 people (15,041 total) ventured out to spent a beautiful day taking in the sights and sounds of the 101st Rodeo. Full results from each event can be found at www.carodeo.com under Events and Results. Photos from the week can be found on our Facebook page atwww.facebook.com/CARodeoSalinas.
